Getting Started with ARMHS Support

We're here to help you build stability and independence — at your pace, in your own community.

What is ARMHS?

ARMHS stands for Adult Rehabilitative Mental Health Services. In plain language: it is one-on-one help with the everyday things that get harder when you are living with a mental illness.

A worker from our team meets you where you are — usually at home or somewhere in your neighborhood — and works with you on the goals you choose. That might be keeping up with appointments, cooking, managing money, taking medication on time, or feeling less alone.

It is not therapy and it is not hospital care. It is practical, steady support that helps you keep your independence.

What Can ARMHS Help Me With?

Almost anything your mental health symptoms make harder. A few examples of what a worker can help you learn to do:

  • Get to and make the most of medical, dental, mental health, and substance use services
  • Handle everyday tasks and activities of daily living
  • Find and keep stable housing and manage a budget
  • Feel safe going out in your community, getting food and supplies, and getting around
  • Build healthy relationships and communication skills
  • Work toward education or a job
  • Work through anything else your symptoms make harder

Do You Qualify?

You may qualify if you:

  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • Have a diagnosed mental health condition
  • Find daily living tasks harder because of that condition
  • Have goals you want to work on — we will help you pick them
  • Are enrolled in Medical Assistance (MA)
  • Live in Minnesota

This is not a complete list. Contact us and we will help you find out if we can help.

What to Expect

  1. Intake Call

A short, friendly phone call. We ask about what you need and answer your questions. No paperwork required to start.

  2. Assessment

You meet our team and a licensed professional completes a functional assessment to build your plan.

  3. Start Support

Your worker begins regular visits and you start working on the goals you picked together.

ARMHS vs. Therapy

Traditional Therapy

  • Focuses on talking through your experiences, thoughts, and feelings
  • Usually happens in an office or by telehealth
  • Usually once a week for about an hour

ARMHS

  • Teaches you skills to solve everyday problems and reach your goals
  • Happens in your home, in the community, or by telehealth
  • Can happen several times a week, up to about five hours total

Many people do both — therapy and ARMHS work well side by side.

What Does a Visit Look Like?

A worker comes to your home — or meets you in the community — and spends anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours working on your goals with you.

During a visit, we will:

  • Talk through your symptoms and how they are affecting your daily life
  • Learn and practice skills that help with those challenges
  • Try those skills out in real situations to reach your goals
  • Look together at what worked and what to try differently next time

ARMHS is not a crisis service. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, or dial 911.
